The contemporary moment is marked by a number of cross-cutting crises that span the globe, traversing multiple social, economic, and political terrains. The advance of austerity has deteriorated social conditions and undermined democratic inputs in advanced capitalist economies and throughout the world. Increasingly severe environmental crises, resulting from the relentless pursuit of capital accumulation, have reignited ecological movements and shifted the political landscape of action and activism. The revolts in the Middle East and North Africa have moved from the Arab Spring, to Libyan Winter, to Syrian Bloodbath. Meanwhile, in the Americas, Indigenous resurgence continues to fiercely contest settler colonial violence and its unrelenting encroachments on the territorial, cultural, and legal rights of not-so-post-colonial Indigenous populations.

Problematique is looking for critical analyses and interpretations of these and other moments of crisis and their related social responses, currents, and interventions. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • The democratic deficit in advanced capitalist economies
  • Left responses to austerity
  • Emerging forms of activism and resistance
  • The rise of far-right reactionary movements in austerity-stricken countries
  • The effects of economic exploitation and imperialism in the ‘Global South’
  • Acute and long-term crises in health
  • Indigenous resurgence, blockades, and land reclamations
  • The continued violence in the Middle East and imperialist responses
  • Racial and gender violence in the context of neoliberal securitization
  • The impact of environmental disasters on vulnerable communities and marginalized groups, including women and racialized populations
